One major factor that has helped fuel the Palestinian-Israeli conflict since its earliest days is the desecration of Holy Sites. Countless synagogues and mosques have been damaged or destroyed in sixty years of fighting. The sensitivity surrounding them can also be so intense that politicisation of them is likely to deepen a conflict, as former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's visit to the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount in 2000 showed - a decision that helped trigger the second intifada. Which is why two organisations hope to draw up a universally shared Code on Holy Sites. |
